Agroecology for food and agriculture: INRA’s contribution to FAO

Research carried out between 2013 and 2015 by INRA and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations has come to fruition in a published report presented on 29 August 2016 during an international symposium in China. The report will also feature in a satellite event during the 43rd session of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS), co-organised by INRA, FAO and IFOAM, from 17 to 21 October 2016.

From 2013 to 2015, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations joined forces with INRA to conduct a survey on innovative approaches that enable markets to act as incentives in the transition toward sustainable and agroecological agriculture in developing countries. Allison Loconto, a researcher in sociology at the Versailles-Grignon centre whose work focuses on innovation, is the INRA expert who co-authored the study. On 29 August 2016, in a dedicated session, she presented the report on the survey at an international symposium on Agroecology for Agriculture and Food Systems in Kunming, China. The event took place from 29 to 31 August 2016, and was co-organised by FAO and the Chinese Academy for Agricultural Sciences (CAAS).

The report will also be presented in Rome during the 43rd session of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) co-organised by INRA, FAO and IFOAM, from 17 to 21 October 2016. One of the goals of the event is to discuss the role that participatory guarantee systems, which offer an innovative alternative to certification by a third party, play in agroecology.
