When he announced this appointment to the press on 14 October, Philippe Mauguin, the President of INRA, paid tribute to Philippe Gillet’s “considerable experience in research and innovation”.
Born in 1958, Philippe Gillet initially studied earth sciences at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in rue d’Ulm, Paris. In 1983, he obtained his PhD in geophysics from Université Paris VII and moved to Université Rennes I as an assistant, becoming a Professor at that university in 1988. He moved to the École Normale Supérieure in Lyon in 1992.
He devoted the first part of his scientific career to studying the formation of mountain chains, and particularly the Alps. He developed experimental techniques to understand the materials that make up the unattainable depths of planets. In 1997, he started work on extra-terrestrial materials, trying to identify substances from Mars, the Moon or planets that have now disappeared.
Meanwhile, he was also active in the management of science and education. He headed the CNRS National Institute of Sciences of the Universe, and chaired the French synchrotron (Soleil), the National Research Agency (2007) and the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon. Before moving to the EPFL, he directed the Cabinet of the Minister for Research and Higher Education.

INRA’s Scientific Advisory Board counts 27 members and it was appointed for a four-year term on 29 December 2014. Philippe Gillet and Anne Varet were appointed President and Board Member, respectively on 6 October 2016, following the resignations of the previous President, Frédéric Dardel, and of a member, Thomas Hirth.
