The potato is the number one non-grain food crop in the world. It is attacked by a plethora of pathogens, which farmers have been managing with an arsenal of pesticides for over 70 years. However, that arsenal is ever shrinking. For 30 years, INRA's "potato team” has dedicated itself heart and soul to developing alternative strategies, such as the use of resistant varieties, pathogen detection tools, and innovative farming systems. This research has resulted in tangible benefits for human health and the environment. The team’s work has earned its members the 2019 INRA Science with an Impact Award.

On 24 October 2019, the French alliance for research on the environment (AllEnvi) published the results of a foresight study, which had been steered in part by three members of the soon-to-be-established INRAE*. This study covered the economic, social and environmental consequences of a rise in sea levels by 2100, along with possible ways to anticipate it. Using eight worldwide scenarios and three territorial focuses, the report provides the keys to anticipating and limiting this phenomenon worldwide – one of the direct effects of climate change – and adapting to it at the territorial scale.

The digital transition is causing seismic shifts. What changes are in store for higher education and research? To answer this question, INRA and Agreenium performed a foresight study focused on their key research themes: agriculture, the environment, food, and animal health. Four scenarios emerged that describe contrasting but sometimes congruous situations. This work has highlighted future directions that the institutions could take...which may lead them beyond their primary fields of study.

On 13 June 2019, INRA delivered a study commissioned by the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME) and the Ministry of Agriculture concerning the carbon storage potential of soils in France. Using a novel methodology, the study was able to evaluate this potential by estimating the implementation cost, region by region, in terms of a 4 ‰ goal. The 4 per 1000 Initiative for Food Security and Climate was launched during the UN Climate Change Conference held in Paris in 2015.

One of INRA’s priority goals is to spur research on pesticide-free agriculture, a major concern for French and European government authorities and citizens. INRA is currently leading a national research programme and driving efforts to create a European roadmap.
